About Cheslatta Carrier Nation

Cheslatta T'En, a Dene Carrier Nation carrying our history, language and relationship to the land into the future

Our Name: Cheslatta Carrier Nation, also known as Cheslatta T'En, are Dene Carrier people. The Carrier people are known as Ta-cullies, meaning people who go upon water. Cheslatta Lake is Tsetl'adak Bunk'ut, meaning Peak Rock Lake.

Population: Our Nation has roughly 380 to 390 registered members, depending on the source, with members living on reserve, on other land and in communities elsewhere.

Location and Treaty: Our community is based at Southbank, on the south shore of Francois Lake, 23 kilometres south of Burns Lake. Our territory encompasses the area around Ootsa and Eutsuk lakes in central BC, and our regional government office is in Prince George. We are in the BC treaty process at Stage 3 and are not currently negotiating. We have not signed a treaty and are not currently affiliated with a Tribal Association.

Culture, History and Economy: Our people traditionally lived on fresh water fish, caribou, deer, and the bountiful berries, herbs and medicines of our lands, and took part in the ancient trade network called the Grease Trail. In 1952 our members were forcibly resettled on two weeks' notice, and our lands were flooded by the Kenney Dam reservoir. In 2019 the Nation reached settlement agreements with BC. Our language is precious, and only a small number of elders speak the fluent Cheslatta dialect. Today we operate businesses including Pondosy Bay Resort, Cheslatta Marine Services and Cheslatta Logging, and offer a training centre and a Strong Start program for children aged 0 to 6. A 2020 agreement with Rio Tinto supports training, employment, business opportunities, environmental stewardship and a scholarship fund.
